Preparing Your Home For A New Year

The new year is right around the corner. What better time to update the look of your home than now? Think of this opportunity like spring cleaning, but in winter.

Everyone has the best of intentions of starting off the new year strong. We think of things like health, organization, family and relationships. While we can’t help you reconnect with family or stick to healthy resolutions, we can help you with decluttering your space so that you can create even more good energy in your home.

Five common reasons homes tend to get cluttered:

  • Recreational shopping – because we always say we need more “stuff”
  • Clutter “creep” – the accumulation of stuff Monday through Friday
  • Emotional attachment – this makes it hard to let things go
  • Mail, magazines, books and papers – easily overlooked, they tend to get stockpiled in drawers and even on floors
  • Keeping what you never use – the “someday” syndrome

Where do you begin? We’ve got you covered. Here are some organizational tips to start the new year off right.

Time to declutter

People tend to save things for later, which is the main cause of clutter, because “later” never comes. Do a thorough walkthrough of your entire home to find all those things you intended to use but never did. Now is the time to throw away that stack of junk mail and fold those blankets on your couch. If you have a pile of possessions accumulating in your bedroom or living room, take a few minutes to put everything back in its original place. Now that you’ve decluttered, you’re ready to get organized.

Find a home for everything

From the picture frames on your wall, to the shoes in the back of your closet, start top to bottom and begin organizing, straightening, and cleaning. Designate a home for everything so they’ll be easier to find when you need them. It’s also a good idea to set aside a few dollars for bins, storage containers, and totes in different sizes. They’re essential for organizing and will keep all your things in great shape whether storing them in your home or one of our units.

Clear out your pantry

This part of your home likely gets overlooked. The pantry can sometimes be the ‘junk drawer’ of the kitchen. Food tends to accumulate so it’s a good idea to take the time to clear the pantry of food that is old or expired. While you’re at it, allocate sections of your pantry for the different food types to help maximize your space.

Clean the fridge

Much like the pantry, refrigerators can also accumulate food. Sometimes food will get pushed to the far back corner behind the milk to be forgotten forever. It happens to the best of us. By throwing out what’s expired, replacing what’s old, and cleaning all the shelves, trays and containers, your fridge will be ready for a fresh start.

Redecorate your bedroom

New year, new bedroom. Your bedroom is your home base, so it is important to keep it clean and organized. The new year is the perfect opportunity to rearrange and redecorate. If you have a desk or television in your bedroom, consider moving it to the living room. This will set your room’s mood to calm and stress-free.

New bedding is a great first step when redecorating. They say you spend a third of your life sleeping, so why not invest a little money into what you’re sleeping on? Start off the new year with new comforters, bedsheets, and pillows and let them be the inspiration for a new color palette. This can give your home base a fresh, new vibe.

Bring new life into your living room

The living room is arguably where the most time is spent. Bring new life into it with new wall decor, a rug, coffee table or all of the above. Or perhaps paint the walls a bright, neutral color and let the natural light pour in. Don’t be afraid to buy small house plants either. The possibilities are endless.

Don’t forget the exterior

We’ve talked a lot about the interior, but don’t forget about the exterior. It might not be the best time to start a garden because of the cold weather, but it couldn’t hurt to clean up and rearrange things outside. Whether it’s new patio furniture or just sweeping all the leaves off the porch, give your outdoor area a new look.

Store your decorations

We saved the most difficult tip for the end. By this point, the holidays have passed. Unfortunately, it is time to take down the tree (but maybe it’s okay to leave the lights out for just a bit longer). It’s likely you have decorations for all sorts of seasons. Why keep them in your garage or closet? Why not find a safe, and secure space to store them until you need them again?

Use these tips to prepare for the new year and remember that A-AAAKey Mini Storage/Key Storage has locations across the United States. Our climate-controlled units are the safest and most secure way to store your belongings year-round.
